I'm currently in the process of moving to a new house and need some advice for how to set up the internet. From what I can see there are cat5 cables running through the walls into most of the rooms in the house. Basically I have about 8 cables that I need to plug into something. I was originally going to have the modem installed and attach it to a switch and then plug all the cables in but from googling the internet I also need a router? How do switches even work? This is all so confusing @_@

So Modem --> Switch ---> Cables = not work?

Modem --> Router --> Switch --> Cables = better?

Or is there an even easier way? I basically just need to get internet into all those rooms lmao

How do the cables terminate in the central location? Is there just loose wires or do they have RJ-45 on all the ends? If they are loose than you will need a patch panel. If not, just a 8 port router should be ok.

Most ISP's will rent you a router, some will even rent you a router with multiple ports. I personally bought a router with 8 ports like this: http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DIR-63...403124629&sr=1-2&keywords=router+wired+8+port It paid for itself in about 2 years because I did not have to pay my ISP to rent one.

You may be able to have them switch the modem to i believe bridge mode and then you should be able to have to modem assign dhcp so you could just use the switch that's not really ideal though. You can run into staples or hell even walmart and pick up a router for like $30-40. A decent 10 port switch, which is what you'll need if you plan to hook up all the jacks will run you about $50. Also just because it's cat 5e doesn't mean it's set up for internet use. I've seen those used for basic phone lines so you may need to double check how they are punched down in the wall.

TL;DR
Yes Modem-->Router--->Switch. Or like Zeph said you could get a router with enough ports to handle what you need eliminating the need for a switch.

@ Zeph Yep they all have the RJ-45 at the ends thank gawd. Thanks for the suggestion I didn't even know you could get an 8 port router haha.

@ Elric I'm pretty sure the cat 5e cables are for internet cause there are also cat3 cables in every room which I'm guessing would be for the phone line?

Thanks guys for the ideas and clarifying stuff. I'll have to see what equipment the installation guy brings next week but so far it seems pretty easy to set up the network ^_^

Use the cat5 connections for gaming consoles. Other than that, get yourself a fucking decent dual band router and get some decent dual band network cards and put them in your computers. Gives pretty much the same speed as wired but with no cables. Cause fuck cables.

I have modem ==> router ==> (2 consoles wired/3 computers wireless). Been using this setup for almost two years now without a single issue.
