Sins tactics from your friend, Tryden

HEY GUYS,

In preparation for another #sinssaturday, I thought I would put together a quick collection of advice to help you survive better in Sins. Obviously there's a mix here of players with hundreds of hours in Sins (me) and people who are newer to the game (Xai possibly next week).

I know this is going to gimp me by revealing some secrets, but I also know it can be frustrating having bullshit strategies thrown your way and being helpless to counter them. So I'm going to provide some of my secrets below. None of the tactics are faction specific, but I do highlight some of the OP faction abilities at the end. The abilities don't constitute all the effective ones for your faction, so you should research all the abilities out there and learn how to exploit yours.

Before I go into the tactics, REMEMBER ONE KEY THING IN SINS: throughout the game, ALWAYS scout to see what the people surrounding you are building. You can't stick with the same strategy every game. Sins rewards those who adapt and change their tactics to respond to what your opponent is doing.

BOMBER SPAM:

Bomber spam is the name of the game in mid-to-late game Sins. Here's how to survive against it:

  • • Kill high value targets and protect your own. Sometimes I jump in a shitload of carriers and not my cap ships/titans if I know my opponent has a lot of carriers. Then I kill one of their cap ships and jump out. Abuse this and whittle away their fleet.
  • • Don't keep your cap ships in the middle of gravity wells if your opponent is mass producing carrier fleets. Keep them on the edge to jump quickly. Research quick jump calculations. Large carrier fleets can destroy cap ships in one bomber sweep, so you want to be able to move them quickly.

BACKDOORING:

While the honourable thing to do is fight your opponent head on with your fleet, the way to win is harrassment. Backdooring is a great way to do this. Here are some backdooring strategies:

  • • Sending 10-15 planetary bombardment ships to one planet, another 10-15 to another. Go around and ignore starbases. This may force your opponent to divide his fleet. If he does, hit one of the divided fleets.
  • • Do this tactic too with anti-structure cruisers. I do this often to wipe out starbases or super weapons.
  • • Don't backdoor if you don't know where your opponent's fleet is. If you run into his fleet, your bombardment frigates/anti-structure cruisers will just feed his/her cap ships.
  • • Counter backdooring with phase jump inhibitors and hangar bays in your gravity well.

OP FACTION ABILITIES:

  • • Strip to the Core for Vasari Loyalist. Combine this with backdooring. Your opponent will cry/rage quit.
  • • Truce Amongst Rogues for TEC Rebel: research early and mass cap planets. Lawl as your opponent puts bounty on you and the pirates help you kill him/her.
  • • Advent super weapon/culture spam: rush the advent super weapon and make a lot of temples. You will cripple player economies if you target a player's homeworld with an Advent super weapon (for those that don't know, Advent super weapons launch their culture to a target planet and it spreads out to nearby planets. Culture modifies your income, so when allegiance goes low, your credit income slows significantly. This can gimp players early.
  • • Insurgency for TEC Rebel/Loyalist. Spam rush this to fuck over players with random rebel spawns. Enjoy the frustration that ensues (but remember, TEC Rebels can easily counter this.

That's just a brief overview. There are also OP titan-specific strategies, OP early game strategies (corvette spam) and some other approaches, but I'll leave those for you to research. The above tactics are ones I've seen cause new players the most trouble, so I hope this will help everyone be able to counter them/lower blood pressures.

I also hope other players (LOOKING AT YOU MAUSER) who have some tips will add to mine in this thread. (=

HAVE FUN, FRIENDS.

I will beat you next time! >:O

also, thanks for the tips, these are good tips!
I too have one tip

Never trust allies. Really, don't do it. Go ahead and make your alliances, but always have insurance. Defend your border planets!

Early Expansion:
My biggest tip would be early expansion. You want as many planets as possible ASAP, so pump out those light frigates, colony caps/colony frigates and expand everywhere. Sometimes, if it is a big map, I will rush and early cap ship and have two expanding fleets going in opposite directions. Once you get a planet you think you will be able to hold, max out civilian infrastructure. Population of planets is the best way to get your credit income up, and population grows soon so you dont want a planet wasting time with the pop at a low cap.

Fighting Neutrals/Early Game:
Send your cap ship in first to draw aggro of neutrals, and after that just let your fleet do the killing. Very little micro is required for neutrals. Early game culture can really help to "secure" your empire and hinder the expansion of other guys, although thats more of an advent strategy not sure about the other races. Learn what your abilities do and how they synergize together, the advent especially are all about how their ships work together. As a result, if you manage to get an Advent player to divide their fleet, you have a better chance of winning.

Resource Management:
If you have more resources than the price of your next ship....you are doing it wrong. You want to constantly be at basically 0 resources. This doesnt meant have a bad economy, quite the opposite, it means spend every resource you have. If you are saving for something then its fine, but dont look at your resources and decided to buy 50 ships at once. Every resource not spent is the same as a resource you dont have!

Know Your Strengths:
Each faction has its strengths and weaknesses and if you build your strategy around your strengths, you will do a lot better in the game. An example is the classic "Holy Trinity" of Advent.

Research:
I am a little less sure on this one, but generally you dont really want to spend too much on those "percent increase" researches early. !0% shields is nice, but if you spend those resources on another ship then you would have a lot more than 10% shields (in the early game anyways) as well as lots of firepower etc. You also want to know where you want to go with your research, sitting in the middle of the game and wondering what to do costs time that could be spent elsewhere.

more when i think of it...

Just B-line the Titan. To hell with everything else, especially Tryden. Man, fuck that guy, seriously. I joke. Seriously, good tips guys. Now if only I had the brains to put them to use while Im playing.

No, this is the patented Genma Strategy. Like aggressively attacking me early game. No one else is allowed to do it
