Building a computer

So I've had enough of my typical <10 fps rate and am thinking of upgrading my gaming experience from my current laptop to a desktop pc. Does anyone have any suggestions or resources for building a decent computer for around $1000 (+-200)?

Re: Building a computer

This is an awesome website that Elric linked a couple of months ago. I actually used it to finish off my recent computer build (it basically recommends you a good build for $1,000, or you can mix and match some components to drive down your costs a bit):

Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for! When referencing their build ratings for various games, is WoW a good analog for GW2?

Re: Building a computer

Sorta, GW2 has higher reseultion texture than WoW, so FPS would be lower than in GW2 than WoW with similar settings. GW2 also takes aadvantage of newer tech like AA (WoW has that stuff but it was added later)

One thing to keep in mind, is also how big of a desktop you want, my very future build i think i'll be doing a M-ATX build, which will give me a smmaller desktop but without losing to much from the standard ATX board, only downside is that the good M-ATX motherboards are a bit pricey $130-$200.

another good site is pcpartpicker.com

$1000 is going to buy you an awesome gaming experience :]

Re: Building a computer

Hmmm, for around that price, I would recommend the following, or somewhere around it:

I know it's a little above the price range you specified, but if you either a) wait for sales to come around on this equipment, or b) saved up just a little bit more, this build will handle pretty much everything you throw at it, on high or better. Just note that this is the price of the tower. It doesn't include monitor, keyboard, mouse, or speakers, since that tends to be much more of a subjective build. Let me know if you want any other suggestions, or think that it could be toned down a notch.

Re: Building a computer

You could save a little by just going with the standard i5-4670. Really no need for the K edition unless you plan to overclock, if not then the difference is minimal.

Re: Building a computer

I think that looks pretty good. I'd try and spring for a GTX 770, maybe shave some money off of the HD (go from a WD black to WD blue maybe)

ALso, Corsair is a great brand for RAM, but those sticks are a bit pricey, i.e. you can get comparable performance with ram like http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-mem ... 0cl9d8gbxl for a bit cheaper. I currently use G.Skill, and have used them in the past. They're a pretty reputable brand as well.

Re: Building a computer

Looks pretty good, though i would agree, you can find cheaper ram. I too use G. Skill and it works perfectly. One last thing to note, or at least keep in the back of your mind is, new consoles have a lot more ram than the previous generation, and by that we're seeing an increase in the amount of video card ram being used, for instance recommended for BattleField 4 is 3gb video card ram, so if you can swing a few more bucks, i would say pick up a 4gb model. You should be fine with 2gb but it wouldn't hurt that for sure.

Re: Building a computer

That mouse looks super tiny, I hope you bought it on purpose.

Re: Building a computer

I know what you mean. The razor naga mouse we ordered came with different attachments for comfort, and people with larger hands. I didn't like the feel of any of them, of course, because my hands are so small. :/

I finished building my computer, and it's like playing a completely different game! When playing on my laptop, I'd get 10-12 fps while standing around and 3-7 fps while doing stuff like dungeons, living story, or in populated areas of WvW. This was on "best performance" preset.

Now, I'm getting around 90 fps while standing around on "best appearance" preset.

It's such a different experience that I'm having a little trouble getting used to not having to accommodate variable lag and other performance quirks from all the time I've spent playing on my laptop.

Nice!

To celebrate, we should do every jumping puzzle in the game :3
