My brain hurts from too much research and writing and drinking, can you guys help me make this into a decent thesis statement? I swear you'll get a byline! (Those are my own not so great questions down there.)

"How do advertisements affect people andhow they communicate with one another? How does it effect society'sview of acceptable forms of communication? How has communicationchanged due to advertising?"

I'm supposed to be researching a topic related to communication. I need to be able to bullshit it into 5 - 7 pages. Who knew that a group communication class would have me writing four damn research papers? I'm pretty sure I'm not remembering something important.. but lord love a duck if I know what it is.

Answer those 3 questions in 3 different setences and I'll help you put it together into a thesis statement =O

One thing that you should consider in advertising is how they use Cognitive techniques to influence people.

Thank you, I'm having a bit of a hard time finding relevant research resources, but I'm just getting started. I'm sure I'll find a few things in the ol school database.
I tried to make them into single sentence answers and am so far failing miserably. I will try again when I am feeling more laconic.
How do advertisements affect people and how they communicate with one another?
Advertising changes the way people perceive themselves and others, changes their expectations of social interactions, and changes them into consumers; enforcing a selfish attitude and rude behavior. (semi-colon fail?)

How does it effect society's view of acceptable forms of communication?
People are emulators by nature. For example, the portrayal of women in advertising is not often kind - women are cast in relatively few roles. Deviance from these roles is often seen as a personal failure, effecting the way that people communicate with her, and in turn the way she communicates to others. Thus, advertising promotes negative or harmful communication as socially acceptable.

How has communication changed due to advertising?
Much of the change in interpersonal communication caused by advertising has to do with image. There is an abundance of stereotypes, each it's own culture with specific rules of engagement, supported by brands and images from advertising. Think of any brand, and an assortment of connotations will also come to mind. McDonald's is cheap, prefabricated. Converse sneakers have 'street cred.' Urban Decay has become associated with the hipster subculture, and Jimmy Choo shoes with the wealthy elite. The name brands that one chooses to advertise on the self is in itself a communication about your lifestyle and values.
EDIT: I'm pretty sure I'm missing my own point. Please disregard.

You might try something like this, Frooz.

How is advertising used by corporations to influence the mass market?

Since our community as a whole is bred to be consumers rather than citizens corporations only need to tug these consumers in one direction or another to purchase their products. The entire basis of this marketing is for the gain of the individual as opposed to the group as whole. Demonstrating how our society has become more self fulfilling and advertising takes advantage of those selfish desires.

What kind of tools do advertisers take of advantage of?

Advertisers are well aware that people can be manipulated through the use of Cognitive-Behavioral techniques, such as demonstrated positive reinforcement. Whenever drinking is shown on the television there is never an idea of the depression that drinking can cause, instead the advertiser shows the consumer enjoying various fruits of life: sex, money, and friendship.

I liked your third point. Keep that.

I wish I could focus on advertising by itself, but everything I say needs to be linked with communication, either directly or by a very small step. I had to delete around three paragraphs last night because I had wandered off topic too far, and was none too pleased with myself.

Ty, ty. I'll need it. My prof is a bastard of a grader. It is pretty refreshing though, having a teacher be more interested in making me think than in being my friend.

See, I myself would communicate to the professor that I know where he and his loved ones live, and that should he wish for them to continue to remain living he would pass me with a "B" grade.

No, not an "A".  Lets not be overly greedy.

Be sure to support your verbal communications with some picture evidence, such as photos of his children leaving school or daycare, and pictures of his home.

Most importantly, when discussing your new grade with the prof, never change your voice or expression.  for those who deal in communication, body language means a lot.  with monotone voice and unchanging expression, they cant tell just how unhinged you actually are.

Good luck!

EUREKA! I did it! (No, I didn't threaten my professor - even though I would very much like to. I am physically weak, and easily intimidated. It would be like mouse playing hardball with a bobcat.):

Advertising reinforces rude and selfishbehavior, promotes negative behavior as socially acceptable, andsegregates people into distinct stereotypes with branding andbehavioral cues.

Just in time, too! It's due tomorrow. I should probably get started on it, instead of posting here.

There's an old saying . . .  "God made all men. Sam Colt made them equal."

meaning: they make guns for all people to even the odds.

Also, I understand holding a firearm tends to inspire self confidence.
