If so, any advice? I'm going to get one in the next few months when i move. I know all about their traits and habits such as running off first chance they get, shedding, etc

I do. will post some advice in a sec. Sounds like you know what you're getting yourself into with this dog, but yeah, make sure you're willing to be committed because sadly, a lot of people pick up Siberian Huskies after seeing them in movies, etc., and don't realize it's a very high maintenance dog breed.

After getting him you'll be spending the next 12-15 years of your life putting in a lot of time into walking, brushing and caring for him

Yeah, I know. It'll shed more down here since it is usually warmer during spring and summer but i'll just keep it brushed. As for exercise, i'm fully aware of how energetic these dogs are. They are sled dogs afterall and seem to have endless reserves of energy. As for male/female, will it really make a difference? I'm not leaning any way towards one or the other and I plan on getting it fixed as soon as possible.

My step aunt in West Virginia lives just outside the city so she has plenty of space for her husky to run around in. After training him, the husky spends a lot of time outside and they have a dog house for him too. Don't know what your new living arrangements will be like, but that's the extent of what I know about them. Her husky is huge, but really lovable.

Male or female doesn't make a difference, I was just being generic.

Good call on getting it fixed. Mine's not and I sort of regret it.

Also, if they have it in your area, sign him up for a training course. I know some people say it's a waste of money, but it really helps Huskys. Also keep in close touch with your breeder if you're getting him from one, and follow the breeder's advice.

Otherwise stock up on coffee. The first few weeks are rough ^_^

I just celebrated three years of Chance being part of my family last month. Hard work, but it's worth it

Yeah, i'll have to puppy proof the place and get everything setup before hand. I need to find a good breeder within a reasonable distance from here and I'd preferably like to get a black & white one and i'm starting to lean towards a male.

Do you plan on crating him at night ours was so destructive that we felt we had to. I second dog training classes especially if you have never trained a dog. And I would also suggest dog parks if you have one near you

Oh yeah, these are incredibly destructive dogs if given the chance. Luckily mine didn't develop the habit, other than a wierd phase he went through where he exclusively ate my girlfriend's bras.

Oh and I forgot to mention they're not loyal, at all. This dog will be your friend, and he'll view you as an extension of his pack. Whether you're the dominant is up to you. A Husky will never have a master.

If you want loyalty look for a German Sheppard or a Golden Retriever

I know they aren't a one man dog and they suck as guard dogs. I also am clearly aware of their destructive power but depending on the dogs personality will determine how much freedom it is given at night and when i'm away. I've already located a dog park that looks good.
