In the meantime I found these great videos that explain blood, health, food, healing, etc, etc.
The first two are a little outdated but they help you understand it better. I can confirm they work as I went from black and white and blurry to clear vision and good color... I almost forgot what the game looked like in color. Took a shitload of food and water but it worked.
