UT2K4

FROOZ!

Does anyone play this? I know Quake live is free, but I'm way too sucky at FPS to play with real people. Every time I boot it up I have to retrain myself from the stupidest AIs who just stand there and shoot to the 'adept' level before I get too pissed off to play anymore.
I was messing around on it last night, which was very fun for me, but not so fun for my dog who is scared of the F word in particular (which I drop frequently, and with passion while playing. FPSs really bring out the sailor in me - I even suprise myself with my inventiveness.) and curse words in general.
I'm sure there are some guides online about how to not suck at playing. I should read them. Any recommendations?

If anyone else has a copy of UT2K4, it would be fun to play on the same map, no? Is that even possible? I don't use that part of the game very much, I have no idea.

edit: I was selling myself short before, saying experienced instead of adept. quite a difference!

I googled "FPS guide" and I keep getting advice on how to boost my frames per second!

Time to turn on my brain I guess.

EDIT: sigh. They're all tl;dr right now. forgive me for posting links for future reference for myself.

2. Have a decent headset so you can hear people coming
3. Dont stand in the same spot for too long
4. Practice Practice Practice
5. Learn when to use which weapons (dont use shotgun from across the map etc)
6. Get used to each map so you can remember where to go, and where the hiding spots are.
7. Dont be the hero (ie. run into a group of enemies thinking they wont hit you)
8. If on a team, stick with the group, dont lead until your confident in your abilities, also let a teammate go around a corner first, he will get shot at first.
9. Hand-eye coordination and quick reflexes are VERY important in FPS, get to learn how far your character will move when you turn, etc. makes for easier headshots/aiming.
10. Play on low latency servers to make it easier on you.
11. If your computer is a little on the slow side, turn the graphics down so you get a high frame per second.
12. Dont spray n pray (ie. holding down the mouse so you fire off multiple shots with no accuracy, 3 burst for the most accurate.

Sir, yes sir! I have a feeling this will be so much easier when I get my glasses, too.
I'll probably have a problem with number 6 though.

I have a disease, CRS. It's a terrible terrible thing.

I tried playing quake live, for the past hour or two. Currently I hate the world, and strafe jumps most of all. Fuck you, Quake live tutorials-that-end-with-a-stupid-one-that-no-one-can-beat-unless-they've-been-playing-for-fucking-ever. Also, fuck you, Quake Live stupid-ass-harder-than-hell-why-are-you-killing-me-in-two-shots-when-I-can't-kill-you-with-seven-shots bots. This game is rigged against noobs. I would go QQ if I weren't so damned angry.

(this is where an angry emote would go if they worked for me)

Eh you should try playing battlefield 2.
Or any of the new battlefield series, no bots, punkbuster takes care of that.

battlefield 2 was my favourite, recently they came out with a new one, i think battlefield 1943.
dont quote me on it.

anyway, its not as fast paced as quake, so you can actually think about what your doing.
I find UT is more. run around as fast as you can clicking anywhere.

I have ut2k4 ill have to load it up some day and join you on a private game.  If that dont work you can always dnload Tribes 2 (yeah i know it went down a few years ago but there is a new company or set of ppl that have put up servers for it) just wiki tribes 2 and the links should be there it is a fun fun game to play also.

first off dont go for headshots in the begining, yes they are a instant kill but learn the game before mastering it. goof around with your weapons learn the pros and cons ( reload time, better close up or ranged, hit %) then pick a weapon of choice and then the 2nd weapon of choice and ignore all other ones. untill you know them like the back of your hand. That way you can be preped for any situation.

learn how to jump around corners and still aim for the chest area. learn where the fastest way to your weapon of choice is.

once you get the hang of the game you can move on to using te wall as a weapon with "grenades"

learn how to dodge as soon as you hear something shooting close by. then learn how to dodge by turnung around and shooting back. ( I had a friend he would count the times shoot and then turn while the other guy is reloading)

once you get the basics then move on to the perfect aim. find a random spot on the map that has a marker or something that makes it unique and start trying to hit it when runing jumping and so on. that will get you trained on headshots. If you want to go to the extremes use a washable black marker and make a dot on the screen ( crosshair center) because that point never moves and some weapons dont have that aim helper in the gui.

just a few tips =p

now give me 30 push-ups
